Second Year Trip to Barcelona

June 12, 2017

Bright and early on Monday 1st of May 2017, 30 excited students and 3 enthusiastic teachers set off from Desmond College to travel to the beautiful city of Barcelona.

Our flight departed from Dublin airport and after some slight turbulence, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, we arrived in Barcelona and were greeted with blue skies and sunshine!

We had a jam packed week, visiting such fabulous attractions as the Olympic Stadium and the Gothic Quarter.

The highlight of our city tour was our visit to the cultural wonder La Sagrada Familia, the architectural masterpiece designed by Gaudi. This magnificent structure is still under construction as new generations of architects continue to work on this truly awe inspiring cathedral.

We also enjoyed a wonderful morning in Park Guell, situated on the elevated city outskirts. This Park features designs by Gaudi as well as plants and flowers from all over Europe.

After an exciting cable car ride from the stunning Montjuic, students had some time to experience the vibrant shopping centres surrounding Las Ramblas.

After absorbing ourselves in cultural delights, it was time to have some fun in the sun, in the thrill seekers paradise of Port Adventura and Ferrari Land. The roller coasters have to be seen to be believed!! Students and teachers had a amazing day, certainly never to be forgotten.

We also had the privilege of visiting the Nou Camp, home to Barcelona FC. We had a tour of the stadium and the museum. This was a dream come true for our some of our students and certainly an enjoyable day for all.

The tour to Barcelona was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by students and staff.

A huge thank you to Ms Liz Cregan for organising the trip and to Ms Joan Nicholls and Ms Margaret O’Mahony for accompanying her with the students.

Desmond College Teachers and Students Volunteer in Kolkata

May 10, 2017

On the 13th of April, a group of five students and two teachers from Desmond College (Roz Barrett, Daragh Collins, Thomas Curtin, Alice Duffy, Hannah McMahon, Ms. Nicolas and Ms. Ryan), left for Calcutta as part of the HOPE TY Immersion Project.

All through the winter and spring, this group fund-raised tirelessly with events that ranged from pub quizzes to selling chocolate, from make up masterclasses to coffee mornings etc. with the support of both the school and wider community, they raised over €17,000 for this worthwhile cause.

They also carried with them, many gifts for the children collected by students of Desmond College.

They spent a week in Calcutta, visiting orphanages, creches, schools, protection homes and even the dump. This experience has opened their eyes to a whole other world and is something that they will hold with them for the rest of their lives.

“It was heartbreaking to see the way people live and the hardships they endure on a daily basis. It was also humbling to see how happy they were with the little that they have.”

These students and teachers must be commended for their outstanding volunteer work, everybody in Desmond College and its community are so proud of you all.

The Hope Foundation

February 21, 2017

The Hope Foundation truly believes in “students helping students” and the Immersion Programme is a tribute to this belief.

Led by teachers, volunteers and HOPE staff, Transition Year and 5th Year students are afforded the unique opportunity to travel to Kolkata for one week and to visit the projects.

They will witness, first-hand, the work of HOPE and the extremities of life in Kolkata. Supported throughout their time in India, students are introduced to poverty, the realities of street children and the joy of HOPE.

A week-long programme is prepared for students, who spend time visiting HOPE projects, interacting with children and adolescents who are in HOPE supported projects and immersing themselves in Indian culture.

Our young Ambassadors will remember the experience for the rest of their lives, and become more aware of their place in society and how they can make the world a better place by caring for people who are less well off than themselves.

Students must fund-raise a substantial, yet achievable sum, which will be donated to the projects. This process teaches the students about the value of such activities as well as learning the skills to creatively raise the funds to meet targets and deadline.

It is a hugely positive and life-changing experience. It gives students the opportunity to engage in experiences not available in the classroom, encourages greater independence and enhances social and cultural development.

Enquiring Minds Attend RDS Primary Science Fair at MIC

Jan 2017: Students from Killoughteen National School, Newcastle West at the 2017 RDS Primary Science Fair (Picture: Sean Curtin)

“This is actually very simple for a project that saves lives,” Julianne O’Connor from Killoughteen NS, in Newcastle West, explained.

Their homemade handheld fire extinguishers, a joint effort between the school’s fifth and sixth classes and their teachers, are made using products you would easily find in the kitchen.

“We all know that vinegar is an acid, and we all know that baking soda is a base, and bases and acids do not mix. It causes a chemical reaction,”said fifth class girls Julianne, Lucy Hennessy, Aisling Sexton and Kate Foley.

The trials to find the optimum mixture of the two ingredients made for some explosive results, and the pupils learned how to take safety precautions when dealing with chemicals.

Nevertheless, the youngsters were provided with some science safety gear by nearby Desmond College … read the full article >>
