Desmond College are County Football Champions!!

June 13, 2017

On the 16th of May the U16 1/2 football county final was played in Mick Neville park, Rathkeale.

Desmond College emerged victorious over Askeaton, with a 4-15 to 3-9 win.

Desmond College’s captain, Dylan Moloney got the boys off to a good start with a point within the first 30 seconds which was quickly followed by a goal by Brendan Guiry. This early lead put the Desmond College boys in high spirits, with another point from Dylan Moloney and one from Danny Moriarty before Askeaton got on the score board.

Askeaton struggled to find the back of the net which was hardly surprising with a solid performance from Micheal Murphy in full back. The supply to the forwards was plentyful with Dylan Moloney sweeping up everything in midfield assisted by Danny Moriarty.

The Desmond College boys didn’t lack support and encouragement as they were continuously being cheered on by trainer/manager Mr Padraig Murphy.

Excellent teamwork between David O’Donovan, Brendan Guiry and Danny Moriarty in the 27th minute rewarded Desmond with their third goal of the half. A point from Askeaton in the 29th minute put a score at half time of Desmond College 3-9 to Askeaton 1-6.

The second half kicked off with Dylan Singh getting fouled and the free being slotted between the posts with ease by Dylan Moloney who gave an absolute man of the match performance.

Askeaton piled on the pressure in the second half, displaying dominance in the air and for the breaking ball. Unfortunately for Askeaton, this was short lived when Desmond college responded with points from Dylan Moloney, Danny Moriarty and Bryan Mortell.

It was an exciting game to watch and we would like to say well done to Askeaton and a huge congratulations to Desmond College.

Well done boys – an amazing close to the sporting year in Desmond College.

DESMOND COLLEGE GIRLS BASKETBALL

June 12, 2017

Desmond College: Basketball Ireland

Desmond College had first, second year and cadette girls’ (u16s) basketball teams competing in the Limerick schools basketball league which is affiliated with the National Governing Body of Basketball Ireland.

Desmond Colleges Cadette (16s) girls narrowly missed out on a place in the Limerick Regional finals in University of Limerick this year. Losing their semi-final game by a close margin to Hospital.

Although bitterly disappointed with their loss both teams showed great sportsmanship and team spirit. We have no doubt that our Cadette girls will be back with fighting spirit next year as some will go on to form a Senior Girls basketball team for Desmond College.

Some great upcoming talent in all of our teams this year. Both our first and second year teams showed great determination and spirit in their games playing teams from Colaiste Mhuire Askeaton, Castletroy College, Salesians Pallaskenry, Hospital, Crescent Comp, Laurel Hill and Thomand College.

Ms Creed and Ms Ryan would like to thank all the girls involved for representing Desmond College and Choláiste Uí Chonba with such enthusiasm, commitment and respect for all opposition. Looking forward to next season already.

Active School Week Desmond College

May 29, 2017

The sun came out for one of the most anticipated weeks of the school year for our students.

This year students and teachers got to make their normal school week more active. All RE and SPHE classes were replaced with “Walk a Mile with a Smile” and junior groups got extra PE classes.

All year groups showed agility from the bouncing castles of Active Kingdom to zorbing it up on the pitch. Penalty shootout and long puck kept lunchtime entertaining!

For our senior classes CDC fitness and Zumba Gerry were on hand.

Smoothie Wednesdays was a treat on such a lovely hot day.

To finish off last 2 classes on the Friday, 6th year students took on the teachers in a game of volleyball!

The PE dept are looking forward to next year already.
