James O’Connor and Patrick Moriarty both 5th Year students are performing on Sunday May 3rd in the National Concert Hall for the final of Siansa Gael Linn. They are performing with other musicians from Colaiste Ide agus Iosef (Abbeyfeale) in a group called Gliondar. There are 8 groups in the final, out of over 50 entries. The final will be aired on TG4 in the coming weeks and will be live on Sunday evening from 7.30pm on R na G (Radio na Gaeltacht). Best of luck to them!
After seeing members of our Trad Group “Draíocht” perform on the “Late Late Toy Show” in December, Lakes Nursing Home in Killaloe put in a very special request for us to visit and perform for their residence. Eleven of the talented musicians from Desmond College Music Department from 1st year to 5th year, travelled to Killaloe on Wednesday 18th March and delivered an hour long performance. The staff and residence enjoyed music, songs and dance which lifted the spirits of all.
To celebrate St. Patricks Day and to spread the atmosphere through the sound of music, Desmond College’s Trad Group “Draíocht”, visited St. Ita’s Nursing Home on Monday 16th March 2015. The wards were filled with music, song and dance. A lovely morning was had by all.
They then travelled back to Desmond College to perform a lunchtime concert for the students and staff. This lunchtime concert included a debut performance from the 1st year Music Class which included their arrangement of Roddy McCorley/Sean South. Instruments included whistles, piano, cajon, bodhrán, accordion and guitars.
After providing Luchtime entertainment for the whole school, the Trad group participated in the First Year Céilí organised by The Irish Department. A fantastic day of music and dance was enjoyed by all. A big thanks to the Music and Irish Department.
Bryan Mortell (First Year -Rang Fionn) came 2nd in TG4 Jig Gig heats on 10th September. Bryan is in a sean-nós dancing group with Cian Ward, Molly and Jess McGrath and Mia Forrestall. The group are trained by Mary and Robert Kelly McCormack. The TG4 show Jig Gig will be aired in October so watch out for Bryan then. There is still a chance that the group may get the Wild Card and get into the quarter finals. Fingers crossed for you all!
Desmond College is experiencing great success in the All Ireland School’s Talent Search Competition. The first round of the competition took place on Friday 7th March in The Strand Hotel. Out of 10 acts to get through to the Munster Final, Desmond College took 5 of the places.
Shannon White, Draíocht (aka: The Desmond College Trad Group), Shane Walsh, Ground Control and Dynamic will be competing in the next round in The Stand Hotel, Limerick on Sunday 23th March at 8pm. All are welcome to come and support!! As this competition is a charity event, proceeds this year will be going to “Cancer Support Service”.

Last Friday lunchtime, to mark St. Patrick’s Day, Draíocht (The Desmond College Trad Group), performed a lunchtime concert here in the College, and visited St. Ita’s Nursing Home in the afternoon to perform for the residents. A lovely afternoon was had by all.
The group consists of James O’Connor (bodhran), Brian Harnett (guitar), Jack O’Connor (Cajon), Patrick Moriarty (Button accordion), Diarmuid Curtin (concertina, vocals), Laoise Curtin (fiddle) and Katie Nugent (concertina). The recording consists of a selection of jigs, polkas, air, song and reels. The jig was composed by Laoise Curtin.

The Desmond College Trad Group performed at a lunchtime concert held in Desmond College on the 01 Oct 2013 in aid of Trócaire. Both students and staff contributed generously to this fantastic cause raising a phenomenal amount for a school. The atmosphere in the college was electric and both the performers and audience had a lunchtime with a difference!!
As this week is also Positive Aging Week, the trad group visited St. Ita’s Nursing Home and played for the residence. Both the residence and staff were thrilled with the performance and are looking forward to more visits from the Desmond College Music Department through the year.
