The Irish Society for Autism

Mr Denis Sexton from the Irish Society for Autism came to Desmond College on Tuesday 3rd Feb and spoke to the Transition Years students about the work that the society does for those affected by Autism. The Transition Year students under the leadership of Kerrie Collins carried out a number of successful fundraising events earlier this year for the charity and raised a massive €1,073.52.

Oesophageal Cancer Awareness Week

Desmond College is promoting awareness for Oesophageal Cancer all this week.

Lollipops will be sold in school all week and all proceeds will go to the Oesophageal Cancer Fund.

Donal Walsh Foundation gives inspirational talk in Desmond College

Elma Walsh of the #LiveLife Foundation gave a talk at Desmond College on 11th December 2014 where she was presented with a cheque for €320.00 that the Desmond College students raised

On Thursday the 11th of December, Desmond College welcomed The Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation to our school. Elma Walsh, Donal’s mother came and spoke to students to keep her son’s inspirational anti-suicide message alive. Students and teachers were touched and moved by Donal’s story.

This was a fantastic initiative undertaken by the Transition Year students in Desmond College as part of their Young Social Innovators project. The students are working extremely hard to promote positive mental health within their school and local community. They have held many fundraising events so far this year and they were very proud to present the money that they had raised to Donal’s mother to help the Livelife Foundation continue their great work.

The Desmond College Trad Group and Transition Year Students visited St. Ita’s Nursing Home on 01 Oct 2014 to celebrate Positive Aging Week by performing for the residents. A great afternoon was had by all. Some of the residents even took part in the music, song and dance!!!

Start Another Year of New Friendships

Desmond College, Newcastlewest Transition Year class follow in the steps of their predecessors and form new and exciting friendships with the service users in the Brothers of Charity Newcastlewest.

The Transition Years are welcomed into the Charity to be immersed in the daily lives of the service users. They are taught how to help and respond to all the people they meet under the direction of Mike Sheahan and his colleagues. The friendship between the school and Brothers of Charity has proven to have a positive effect on all involved.

The Transition Years will have the opportunity to complete work experience and organise different events for their new friends. The service users of the Brothers of Charity reap the rewards by having new and young faces around the centre, showing assistance in their activities. Friendships are formed and last for years.

Lions Quiz Night

Desmond College entered 4 teams into the Lions Club Schools Quiz Night on Thursday 27th March. The winning team in the Senior Section was Desmond College. The Team members were Darragh McMahon, Bryan McCarthy, Richard Taylor and Adam Greaney. The winning Junior Team was from Colaiste Mhuire Askeaton.

On 14th December 2013, Desmond College held a record breaking Siege of Ennis in the school.

Students from 1st and 2nd year along with some very brave teachers, including the Principal, danced a Siege of Ennis for 40 mins while the Trad Group played for them!

This event was to launch the TY Young Social Innovator Project which aims to follow last years TY Group and continue to raise awareness of SADS. The dance was watched by members of the school community along with local sporting and business representatives. The event finished with a coffee morning where delicious cakes were served to all including parents of the TY class who came to show their support.

Much thanks must be given to the TY class along with Ms. Carol Liston and Ms Elaine Higgins for organising such a great event.
