Desmond College Gets Active for Active Schools Week: April 2015

The Active Schools Week is to raise awareness amongst staff, students and families, and provide schools with an opportunity to reinforce the message that not only is physical activity good for you but it can also be FUN and a great way to spend time with friends.
The theme of the week was “Active Body, Active Mind”. The sun was shining for Desmond Colleges first annual Active Schools Week, where the PE Department hosted a variety of activities throughout the week for both staff and students. Teachers also got involved by incorporating ‘Active lessons’ in their subject area as part of the week.
ACTIVE MONDAY
- The Limerick Sports Partnership hosted a range of fun and active co-operative games for all first year students.
- During Active School Week all Religion and SPHE classes were invited to take part in ‘Walk a mile, with a Smile’ with their class teacher.
- 5th Year Students took part in a Box-Fit Class with Kieran Doyle of Crème Dela Crème Fitness (CDC) – “Fitness at Its Finest”.
ACTIVE TUESDAY
- 6th Year Soccer Tournament, Penalties and Cross-Bar Challenge.
- Poc Fada at lunchtime in the pitch. Junior and Senior Competition.
- Free Fruit Tuesday from the School Food Company at lunchtime. Students enjoyed a variety of fresh food at lunchtime.
- LCA 1 and LCA 2 participated in a fun and active Box-Fit Class with Kieran Doyle of Crème Dela Crème Fitness (CDC) – “Fitness at Its Finest”.
- Staff Box-Fit class after school Tuesday with Kieran Doyle who put staff through their paces with a great cardio workout filled with boxing, running and conditioning circuits!
ACTIVE WEDNESDAY
- Walk on Wednesdays: Students living within walking distance are encouraged to walk to school on Wednesday.
- Desmond College was delighted to welcome Ireland women’s rugby player Alison Miller. In August 2014, Alison along with her fellow players on the Irish Team experienced success by beating New Zealand for the first time. They also scored a try and reached the semi-final of the World Cup for the first time in history.
- Alison Miller is a Sky Sports Project Mentor who gave a talk and activity session with 5th Year Girls who are participating in an ongoing Sky Sports Living for Sport Project.
- Transition Year students enjoyed a GAA Coaching Course in the pitch all day Wednesday delivered by James Ryan (Limerick Senior Hurler).
- Basketball for Fun at lunchtime in the PE Hall.
ACTIVE THURSDAY
- LCA 2 students and Rang Donal participated in a fun and skilful class of Judo with Mr James Bourke from The Limerick Judo Academy.
- Second and Third Year Students from Gaelcholáiste U Chonba enjoyed a Box-Fit class with Kieran Doyle.
- Transition Year students enjoyed Part 2 of the GAA Coaching Course in the pitch all day Wednesday delivered by Ger Downes (GAA Games Development Officer).
- Free Smoothie Thursday: A smoothie bar was set up by the School Food Company at lunchtime and students availed of some tasty smoothies, which went down a treat!
- Thursdays afternoon’s events included a 1st & 2nd Year Soccer Blitz. A great audience of students and staff cheered on students during this fun and inclusive competition.
ACTIVE FRIDAY
- JERSEY DAY FRIDAY: For €2 Students wore a Jersey of their choice (GAA, Soccer or Club team jersey) for today. The school was full of colour and even staff wore jerseys too.
- Penalty Competition at lunchtime: Staff and Students fun penalty competition.
- Hydration Friday: The School Food Company supplied free water with every purchase in the canteen at lunch.
- Kieran Doyle of Crème Dela Crème Fitness (CDC) – “Fitness at Its Finest” hosted Fitness Friday where he delivered an inclusive Box-Fit session for all Junior Cycle students (1st-3rd Year) in block sessions. For some of our Junior students it was their first time participating in a Box-Fit class which they really enjoyed.
- Wii Sports many students joined together to enjoy the interactive console.
- Irish traditional flash mob at lunchtime this was organised by the music department.

Different Activities will be organised during Active Schools Week. Keep an eye on the Active Schools Notice Board for a list of activities that will be taking place that week.
