Transition Year ‘Guide A Key’ Mini Company

Transition Year students are currently busy setting up their mini company for a number of competitions in the near future. The students have designed a device that helps people with dexterity issues to guide their key into a keyhole with ease.

Desmond College Harty Cup Hurlers

The Harty Cup campaign drew to a close last weekend with Thurles CBS being crowned champions in a 2-12 to 1-12 defeat over St Francis College, Rochestown. West Limerick Colleges drew with Thurles CBS in the opening round of the Harty Cup despite being without one of their star players.

Pull_Together 5km Fun Run/ Walk

The Transition Year students with the help of their teacher Ciara Broderick as part of their Young Social Innovator (YSI) project have organised a 5km fun run/walk. It will take place on Sunday 19th April at 12pm beginning at Desmond College. All participants can register at Desmond College on the day beginning at 10.30am. The entry fee is €5 for adults and €2 for students/children. All proceeds will go to Console who support and help people bereaved through suicide.

Kiara Carroll, Julie Cantillon and Terri Keane are Presented with a Perpetual Beekeepers of Excellence award for 2015 from the Irish Beekeepers Association for participating in the BT Young Scientist Competition

Dr Eamonn Magee President of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Association presented Kiara Carroll, Julie Cantillon and Terri Keane with a perpetual Beekeepers of Excellence award for 2015 for participating in the BT Young Scientist Competition.

The girls project was in the senior biological section, it was a statistical investigation into the treatment of the Varroa mite and its effect on the native Irish Apis mellifera. The girls worked with the docile hives of limerick beekeeper Mr Donal Cooper.

Transition Year Work Experience

Transition Year students in Desmond College are currently preparing for their second work experience from the 2nd – 6th March.

They will be based in a range of areas including Moore Park Agricultural College, Accountants, Solicitors and Gaming Technology.

Work experience provides many benefits for students by helping them to acquire skills and experience that will allow them to stand out to future employers. It gives them the opportunity to see if they are suited to particular careers. It equips them with certain soft skills such as team working, communication skills and commercial awareness, all of which are sought after by employers.

Cyberbullying

Forensic psychologist Dr Maureen Griffin — who runs courses for children, parents, and teachers based on online behaviour will be speaking to all 1st, 2nd, 3rd and TY students on issues including Cyberbullying, Social Networking, chatting Online & through Apps, Sharing Information, Privacy Settings and Mobile Phone Safety. This will take place in Desmond College on February 25th 2015.

Dr Maureen Griffin will also hold an information evening for all parents of students in Desmond College and parents of 6th Class Primary School children on Wednesday 25th Feb from 6.30 – 7.30pm. Talks for parents provide an overview of what is currently popular among students, what the potential dangers are and practical advice on how to protect children when they are online or using their mobile phone. All of the above issues, addressed in the student talk, are covered.

Second Year Trip to Paris – Bon Voyage!!

This weeks sees our second year students preparing for their school trip to France.

They will spend time in the Montparnasse area where the group can climb the Montparnasse Tower, enjoy a relaxing Bateaux Mouches cruise down the Seine taking in all the magnificent Parisian sights, receive a self-guided tour of the Louvre, one of the largest museums in the world.

They will visit the Champs Elysées. This prestigious avenue is considered to be one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. An evening will be spent in Aquaboulevard, this aquatic pool stretches across 7000 m². It has a tropical temperature of 29 °C and is home to an array of water slides, wave pools, jacuzzis, giant toboggans and an outdoor sandy beach.

The group will take a trip to the sensational symbol of Paris: The Eiffel Tower. From here they are given a breathtaking view of the city. They will have the opportunity to visit Notre Dame and the Sacre Coeur.

To conclude the trip the group will head for Disneyland Paris, Disney is home to astounding attractions such as Big Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain, many fabulous musical shows, street parades and plenty of your favourite characters to meet. We hope they have a fantastic trip and we are looking forward to see the pictures and hearing about their experiences.

Desmond College winners of the Good Food Company Poster Competition held in Desmond College. The students designed posters which will be used by the company to promote healthy eating in schools. Eve and Chloe won €20 vouchers while Alan won a Tablet.

Roger Mehta from the Harmony Program visited Desmond College on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th Feb to speak with Second Year students.

This event was organised by Ms A Ryan. The Harmony Program portrays the realities and consequences of misusing drugs or alcohol by rock and rap artists who young people identify with and look up to.

Alison Miller, SKY SPORTS ambassador and Irish Rugby player visits Desmond College

Alison Miller, SKY SPORTS ambassador and  Irish Rugby player visited Desmond College on Wednesday Feb 11th. She came to speak with the 5th year girls before they embark on their ‘SKY SPORTS for living’ programme. The girls will take part in this programme over the next few months. The programme will allow them to set personal goals in relation to their fitness levels and attitude to being active. Alison will be working closely with the group giving them guidance along the way.
