Vourneen Gavin Barry, Principal of Desmond College, Newcastle West and Norma O’Brien, Principal of Coláiste Mhuire, Askeaton, travelled to China during the midterm break as part of an educational delegation organised by the Confucius Institute in UCC. The delegation visited Beijing & Shanghai, visiting sights such as the Great Wall of China and Tiananmen Square and experiencing Chinese culture first-hand.
The delegation visited the Confucius Headquarters in Shanghai and spent time at Shanghai University, touring the campus and meeting with a group of Irish students studying Business, Arts & Chinese, from UCC.
The delegation also visited a number of schools and met with Minister for Education & Skills, Jan O’Sullivan at Shibei Junior High School in Shanghai. Minister O’Sullivan spoke of the introduction of a Short Course on Chinese Language & Culture in the new Junior Cycle Student Award and both Coláiste Mhuire and Desmond College intend to continue their collaboration with the Confucius Institute in UCC, in order to provide this Short Course to incoming 1st years.

Music Department Goes to Cork!
The Desmond College Music Department attended a performance by the Cork Pops Orchestra at City Hall in Cork on Friday 07 Nov’14.
Students were exposed to a fantastic programme entitled “Blockbuster Classics-Music from the Movies“. It contained some of the great film scores that were very familiar to the audience: Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, some great classical music used in film: Verdi, Mozart, and some great ‘classics’ of the world of film: The Sound of Music, Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney.
The aim of this concert was to develop the ability to separate sound and vision in an increasingly visual and multi-media world.
The Orchestra had two special guests. DJ Dashka performed one of his music technology pieces accompanied by the orchestra, and showed a piece of his work which he compiled as part of his Masters Degree, composing music to accompany a short film. Finally we were treated to a performance of 3 well known songs: Let it Go, Happy and All of me, by Keith Hanley. A great day was had by all.
