Guidance Counselling

Young people today have to make important decisions about subject choice and career options.

We have a fully qualified Guidance Counsellor available to students and parents. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and in complete confidence, pupils are advised and guided on future career plans and can discuss matters of concern to them.

  • Guidance Counselling is at the centre of this wheel of student support. Through aptitude testing, advice and guidance, we direct students and help them in their search for a career or college place of their choice. Guidance counselling refers to the full range of activities that assist pupils to make choices about their lives; these include personal, social, educational and career. Through counselling students are supported and helped through any difficulties they may have in their personal and private lives.
  • This year our First and Second Years have been involved in the Access Programme run by Limerick Institute of Technology (L.I.T.) and The University of Limerick (U.L.), which raises an awareness of third level and further education. One class, Rang Brendain, were lucky to be drawn to work with L.I.T. and Junior Achievement Ireland which is a six week programme on the economics of staying in school. They visited L.I.T. and the county council offices for workshops.

We look forward to supporting our students in guidance and counselling, in an ever-changing world and in a time of recession, where the value of guidance in education has never been more imperative.

Broadening Horizons

As part of the University of Limerick Access Programme, our first years, Rang Barra and Rang Brian, and our second years, Rang Aoife and Rang Aindriu, participated in the “Broadening Horizons Project”.

The aim of this project was to make students aware of future educational options, the point requirements, the subject choices required for specific courses and the sporting activities available in the University of Limerick and in L.I.T.

Under the stewardship of Ms Ryan and Ms Liston, our first years researched and designed informative posters on future educational options.

To encourage their aspirations, our second year students were given a tour of the Living Bridge, the Library, the Courtyard and the sports arena at UL.

Ms. Nash, Ms. Quaid and Mrs. Browne report that it was an invaluable taster project to help our students broaden their horizons.
